Duxbury Residence
Duxbury Residence is a single-family home for a modern orthodox family on a quiet street in the heart of the Beverlywood neighborhood in Los Angeles. As the architects and interior architects of the project, we designed the rooms to be organized in a way to optimize the expansive views of Century City as well as create an easy flow of spaces for this active family of six. With this being the client’s “forever home”, the floorplan needed to have spatial flexibility and multifunctionality to accommodate growing children, home office spaces, and entertaining friends and family.
Maximizing natural daylight but maintaining visual privacy was a challenge in this dense neighborhood. The design includes large clear story windows and skylights to bring light into the deepest part of the house. Full height sliding glass doors erase the border between interior and exterior spaces—one quintessential characteristic of living in Southern California.
Warm exterior wood siding with a low-slung sawtooth roof give identity to the house from the street, and a Brise Soleil at the entry helps to block direct sunlight into the home. White stucco and full height glass windows open to large-spanning terraces that overlook the backyard. A daylit basement with terraced planting further expands the openness of the house and brings in unexpected amounts of light to an otherwise dark basement.
The open stair is at the center of the house and carries light throughout all three stories, connecting the close-knit family to one another while also allowing everyone to have their own retreat when needed. Each bedroom has access to balcony spaces and attached bathrooms. Guest suites are situated in the spacious basement.
The kitchen is the hardest working part of the home with the most activity and liveliness. Oversized windows along two sides of the room bring in plenty of natural light and air while expansive views of the landscape bring the natural environment in. Custom cabinetry, very specifically catering to a Kosher lifestyle, is expressed with light, warm and bright materials such as white Calcutta counters, white oak veneer, and white laminate cabinets.
