The Amsterdam
The Amsterdam is a boutique hotel located in the vibrant neighborhood of Condesa in Mexico City. Inspired by the French colonial architecture that once flanked a historic hippodrome street, the new hotel, designed and built by Viadora draws upon this influence to create a contemporary space that seamlessly blends traditional and modern sensibilities. Working in close collaboration with Viadora, BA Collective served as the interior designer to ensure that the hotel, while evoking a French aesthetic, offers guests an authentic and immersive experience of Mexico City.
The concept of this hotel project is to provide guests with a personalized experience of the city, encouraging long-term stays and exploration of Mexico City's rich culture and heritage. The hotel is an alternative to conventional hospitality, allowing guests to live like locals during their stay. To achieve this, the hotel offers fully furnished apartments with full kitchens, enabling guests to shop, cook, and embrace the local lifestyle.
Drawing inspiration from minimalist historical architecture, the design of the hotel's common spaces embraces a contemporary reductive approach. Simple molding profiles adorn the walls, reminiscent of traditional architecture, while a warm neutral gray palette pervades the entire space, creating a sense of understated elegance. A modern play on traditional stone patterned floors pays homage to the textured, multi-colored approach of art deco design.
Central to the hotel's character is the prominent use of oversized art, juxtaposing historically inspired architecture with contemporary photography. This blend enhances the qualities of each distinct art form, enriching the overall experience and creating pivotal architectural moments.
One architectural challenge of the project was the integration of a sunken lobby, a half floor below street level. The design aimed to maximize natural daylight and ensure efficient circulation from the street. A pivotal metal door in the art deco style marks the entry, flanked by steel window frames fitted with linear art glass panels. The lobby itself features a grand piano, while an opposite metal stair leads visitors into the reception area. There, a curved stair connects all hotel floors and draws ample light from an overhead skylight.
The Amsterdam encapsulates the essence of a boutique hotel experience. Embracing the influences of French colonial architecture while maintaining a contemporary aesthetic, the hotel's design by Viadora and interior design by BA Collective offer guests the opportunity to truly live like locals and explore a city rich in culture.
