Turning Point Residence

Located in Los Angeles, Turning Point Residence is designed to maximize space by creating four distinct levels that pivot from one axis line. The effect is a deconstruction from the more traditional boxed-shaped structure, resulting in geometries that dynamically intersect, causing the eye to move from one angle to the next along a vertical path.

In order to embrace as much outdoor space as possible, which is a quintessential aspect of SoCal living, each level of this 4,311 SF home allows for its own unique set of terraces with varying vistas of the surrounding natural elevations. The upper tier of master bedrooms is open to the sweeping hillside while the lower bedrooms are cocooned in greenery. The main living area on the ground floor smoothly transitions to the expansive lounge and pool areas, providing plenty of room for relaxing or entertaining.

With a resolved concept in mind, the structure was designed to fuse engineering precision with organic fluidity. Faceted aluminum panels make up the front façade, an architectural statement in dimensionality and sharp lines offset by a vintage nickel, textured patina that has a subtle reflective quality. The main spiraling stairway is constructed of pigmented plaster and a steel guardrail; it makes for a bold yet soft shape that flows from the ground up. Natural marble stone stairs add to the contrasting visual.

Overall, there is warmth and playfulness to the interiors. Materials in oak and poplar woods, porcelain, and limestone gives each room neutral yet inviting tones. Natural light floods in through an abundance of glass walls, creating shadows that bounce off the curves, planes, and angles. As the interior designer and a curator of art, the client selected pieces from their diverse collection to showcase. The bohemian nature of the pieces is a complementing counterpoint to the modernity of the architecture.
